Nr. 3 Winter 2001/ 2002 42  Focus Aircraft  Northrop Grumman F-14 Tomcat: US Navy today - With its replacement, the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, entering Fleet service, the F-14 Tomcat is in its twilight days. In the 1990s the carreer of the fleet defender “par excellence” saw a dramatic resurgence with the adoption of the bombing role, and the F-14 soon established itself as the carrier air wing’s prime long range attack platform. The integration of LANTIRN allowed the Tomcat to deliver weapons with great precision and to designate targets for other aircraft in the “Fast-FAC” role. In these duties the F-14 has seen considerable action over IRAQ, Yugoslavia and now Afghanistan.
Scheduled to be out of the service before the end of the decade, the Tomcat will not disappear without a fight. In the 1990s the F-14 community claimed that «The Cat is Back»: 10 years on and it has not gone away.

Nr. 3 Winter 2001/ 2002 80  Variant File  Eurocopter AS.332, AS.532 and EC.725 Super Puma and Cougar - Turning to the more powerful Makila turboshaft allowed Aérospatiale to develop the Puma airframe into a larger and more versatile helicopter, while retaining the agility and performance of the original design.
Ongoing development, including two fuselage stretches, has led to a family of helicopters which can answer a wide range of military requirements.
